WHAT IS AN ABDOMINOPLASTY?
An Abdominoplasty, or a “tummy tuck” is a procedure done on women or men who have extra skin and stretchmarks after weight loss or pregnancy. When I perform a tummy tuck, not only do I remove this excess skin, but I also bring your abdominal muscles together (to give you that “tight” feeling on the inside as well), create a nice new belly button, and use liposuction as needed to contour areas such as your waist, hips and the supra-pubic areas. I always try to contour the abdomen so that you get a better waistline, and sewing the muscles together helps tremendously. Some people may also have some “sagging” of the pubic area which I also pull up to give you a flat abdomen from the bottom of your breasts to your pubic area. I always use sutures underneath your skin (subcuticular sutures) so that you get the best scar possible. I will also work with you over the next few months to keep that scar MINIMAL, and, depending on your genetics, it can usually heal as a thin white line. The scar is always kept LOW, so it can be hidden under your underwear line or bathing suit.
If you have had gastric bypass (one of my specialties is post-bypass reconstruction), or have lost a lot of weight, I do perform special procedures such as a VERTICAL (or two directional) TUMMY TUCK and hernia repairs. When I see you in the office I will tell you what procedure is going to give you the best results.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
A tummy tuck is usually an out patient surgery that takes approximately 2 hours. I use an anesthesiologist to perform general anesthesia, so you will be asleep for the entire procedure. After the surgery you can go home, and will be resting in bed for a couple of days. Most people go back to work in 2-4 weeks, depending on the kind of job you have (desk job vs. heavy lifting). You will also have an easy to care for drainage tube in for an average of 10 days, and will need to wear a garment for 2 to 4 weeks.
IS THERE A RISK OF COMPLICATIONS ?
Although complications are very rare in my practice, especially if all of our before and after instructions are followed, sometimes people do get a seroma ( a small fluid collection under your skin) or have healing problems. I usually find smokers have higher risks of these problems, so I will not perform a tummy tuck on a patient who is smoking unless they have quit for at least 3 months.
WHAT IS THE APPROXIMATE COST ?
Our fees for a tummy tuck are approximately $6000 to $8000. This estimate does include the anesthesia and OR fees. Financed, this can be as low as $150.00/month!
