What Are My Non-Surgical Options?

Not interested in going “under the knife”? There are now many nonsurgical treatment alternatives that we can perform to slow down the obvious signs of aging. In fact, modern times and technology have truly changed how surgeons deal with the aging face. For many decades, the only option was a face lift, a major procedure that requires months of recovery time. Many new noninvasive procedures are now available that can be performed with almost no recovery time and at a fraction of the cost.

There are four aspects of the aging face that we can look at improving with nonsurgical tools:
  1. Fine lines and wrinkles: Those are the little lines around your eyes or on your forehead, usually resulting from facial expression. We also call these active wrinkles since they occur with active motion of the muscles of facial expression.
  2. Deep facial lines: These are the deeper creases that go from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial fold) as well as other places on the face. Over time, the fine lines can become deep lines.
  3. Sagging skin and bone atrophy: Over time, we see the effects of gravity on our face. Our cheeks, forehead, and jowls descend lower on our face as we age. This leaves hollows under the eyes, and creates jowling over time. Deeper in the face, our bone structure also tends to dissipate and atrophy.
  4. Skin quality: With sun exposure, hormonal changes, and time, we develop age spots, red and brown spots, discoloration, unevenness, and acne scarring. All of this contributes to the overall aging of our face.
Noninvasive aesthetics can address all four of these aspects of facial aging with quick, and generally affordable procedures. The toolbox that we have in noninvasive medical aesthetics has really grown over the last ten years. It’s not just Botox™ anymore! Doctors can use individual treatments or multiple treatments together to improve your overall look. Of course, treatments can still be aggressive, so you need to plan for downtime. It is also important to realize that most of these modalities are not permanent and will have to be repeated and maintained on a regular schedule.
