It’s important that you don’t rely too much on age to assess your overall health when considering surgery. That means that you shouldn’t assume that because you’re under forty, you’re healthy enough for plastic surgery, or that because you’re older, that you’re not. Age is relative and plenty of people up to the age of sixty-five have plastic surgery all the time. The rule at our practice is that if you’re over the age of sixty-five, we’ll do your surgery in the hospital where we can observe you overnight afterward.

Make sure you can answer yes to all of these questions before you proceed with scheduling your plastic surgery procedure.
  1. Have you had a medical evaluation done by your primary care physician within the last six months?
  2. Did your medical evaluation cover all the points listed in the previous checklist?
  3. Have you divulged to both your primary-care physician and your plastic surgeon all medical issues and surgical procedures you are having now and/or have had in the past?
  4. Have you given a list of all your current and past medications (including supplements, herbal medications, etc.) to your primary-care physician and to your plastic surgeon?
  5. Have you given a list of all of your medications and food and environmental allergies to your primary-care physician and your plastic surgeon?
  6. Are you and your doctor confident that any medical issues you have are under control and that, overall, you are in good health for the procedure?
  7. Did you ask, “What is my ASA physical status classification?” Is it two or under?
  8. Did your surgeon discuss the risks of surgery with you?
  9. Do you have health insurance to cover you in case you do have to go to the hospital for any reason after the surgery?
  10. Does the person performing your anesthesia know your full medical history and have all the records of your medical clearance exam?
If you answered yes to all of these questions, you have passed this test. Congratulations! You are one step closer to getting your procedure!
