What to Do With an Old Tattoo
In North America, more than 50 million people have at least one tattoo. Some have chosen to be tattooed for cosmetic reasons while for others, tattooing was a way to express an important time of their life or belonging to a particular community. As life changes, however, the tattoo may no longer be as relevant.
Until recently, there was no way to effectively remove a tattoo – the tattoo could only be cut, peeled or scraped away along with the skin. This was often painful and resulted in scarring.
Laser treatment, however, has made it possible to remove even large and dark tattoos quickly and painlessly, leaving the skin intact.
During the procedure, laser energy is directed to the tattoo and absorbed selectively by the tattoo pigment. The ink shatters into tiny fragments, which are then absorbed and eliminated by the body through its natural processes. Over a course of several 15 to 30 minute treatments, the tattoo fades until it is completely eliminated.
Amateur tattoos, which usually consist of a single color, may be removed in three to six sessions. Professional tattoos, which may have more elaborate designs or use several different pigments, require six to 10 sessions.

Surgery Can Improve Bad Breast Augmentation
Although most women are delighted with the results from their breast augmentation surgery, some experience less than optimal results. According to studies cited by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), as many as one quarter of the 380,000 U.S. women who undergo breast augmentation each year have an additional surgery during the first five years after implantation.
There are many different things that can go wrong in breast augmentation surgery. Among the most common are shifting of the implant, excessive scarring, drooping of the breast, asymmetrical implants and implant rupture.
These problems tend to occur more frequently in procedures performed by surgeons without extensive experience or certification in cosmetic procedures. Sometimes, though, they can arise after surgery performed by even the most skilled surgeon. This is because many factors can influence the outcome of breast augmentation, including trauma to the breast following surgery, excessive compression of the breast during mammography, failure of the patient to properly care for breasts post surgery, and the aging process itself.
Correcting a breast augmentation offers a way for patients to finally achieve the results they desire. Many times, it is possible to completely eradicate the problem so that patients experience the full benefit of breast augmentation surgery; in other cases, a complete correction isn’t possible but significant improvement can still be obtained.
Some women have experienced good results from breast augmentation, but would like to replace their saline implants with silicone. The FDA re-approved silicone breast implants in 2006 after they were pulled from the market fourteen years earlier on concerns of rupturing. Many people believe that silicone offers a more natural look and feel than saline.
Breast implant revision, however, is a complex procedure in which only a few U.S. surgeons specialize. This type of surgery is made more complicated by internal and external scar tissue, thinned skin around the implants and a potentially altered anatomy of the breasts and chest wall resulting from prior surgeries.
Dr. Shah is one of just a handful of California surgeons with expertise in breast implant revision.

New Options Offer Easy Way to Finance Procedures
As an elective procedure, cosmetic surgery is not covered by most health care plans. This meant that in the past, the most common way to pay for aesthetic procedures was by check or credit card. Recently, though, new financing options designed especially for cosmetic surgery have become available that offer benefits over these other payment methods.
Health care financing is now offered by several of the largest financial companies, with programs that work like a line of credit. Once an applicant is approved, he or she can keep using the credit line up to the maximum amount for follow-up treatments or different aesthetic procedures.
Up to $25,000 can be financed with no up-front costs. With interest rates as low as 1.9%, rates are lower than many credit cards and interest-free loans are available to qualified applicants. Repayment terms are flexible, and can extend from three months to five years depending upon the desired monthly payments: as payment periods become longer, monthly payments decline. There are no prepayment penalties and no annual fees.
Applications can be submitted online or by telephone and approvals are made within minutes.
The programs have become so popular that in 2007, more than one quarter of all cosmetic surgical procedures in the U.S. were financed.
Beautologie uses two of the largest health care financing companies, Care Credit and Capitol One Healthcare Finance, as well as the online medical loan company, MyMedicalLoan.com.
